Firefighting gas cylinders, often referred to as firefighting gas tanks or cylinders, are essential tools in the field of fire protection and emergency response. These cylinders are typically filled with various types of gases that serve specific purposes during firefighting operations. Here are some of the important uses of firefighting gas cylinders:

  • Fire Suppression: Firefighting gas cylinders contain agents such as carbon dioxide (CO2), clean agents like FM-200 or Novec 1230, or dry chemical powders. These agents are discharged to suppress fires by reducing the oxygen concentration or cooling the fire. For instance, CO2 is often used in server rooms or electrical equipment fires, as it is non-conductive and leaves no residue.
  • Extinguishing Class B Fires: Some firefighting gas cylinders are specifically designed to extinguish Class B fires, which involve flammable liquids and gases. These cylinders release agents like dry chemical powders or foam to smother the fire and prevent it from spreading.
  • Preventing Fire Rekindling: After the main fire has been extinguished, gases like nitrogen are used to displace oxygen in the area to prevent fire rekindling. Nitrogen inerting is common in situations where there is a risk of residual embers or reignition.
  • Containment and Isolation: Gas cylinders can be used to create safe zones or isolate certain areas during a fire incident. By introducing an inert gas like argon or nitrogen into a specific space, it can be sealed off from the rest of the building, preventing the fire from spreading.
