Inside the cylinder the stored gas may be in a liquid state, dissolved state, or compressed gas. Often, gas cylinders are elongated and may stand upright on a flattened bottom at one end with the valve at the top.

There is no fix life of gas cylinders defined in any relevant cylinder manufacturing standard. The regulatory authority in each country defines the frequency of periodic inspection / testing and requalification of the cylinders.
Different countries have different gas color codes but attempts are being made to standardize the colors of cylinder shoulders. Colors of cylinders for Medical gases are covered by an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard, ISO 32; but not all countries use this standard. Within Europe gas cylinders colors are being standardized according to EN 1089-3, the standard colors applying to the cylinder shoulder only; i.e., the top of the cylinder close to the pillar valve. In the United States, color-coding is not regulated by law. The user should not rely on the color of a cylinder to indicate what it contains. The label or decal should always be checked for product identification.
Gas cylinders have a stop angle valve at the end on top. During storage, transportation, and handling when the gas is not in use, a cap on the Neck ring may be screwed over the protruding valve to protect it from damage or breaking off in case the cylinders were to fall over. The valves on industrial, medical and diving cylinders are usually of different sizes and types, as are the valves for different categories of gases, making it more difficult to mistakenly misuse a gas.
In the United States, valve connections are sometimes referred to as “CGA connections”, since the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) publishes guidelines on what connections to use for what products. In the EU,DIN connections are more common than in the United States. Medical gases may use the pin-index system to prevent incorrect connection of gases to services.
In the UK, the British Standards Institution sets the standards. Included among the standards is the use left-hand threaded valves for flammable gas cylinders (most commonly brass, BS4, valves for non-corrosive cylinder contents or stainless steel, BS15, valves for corrosive contents). Nonflammable gas cylinders are fitted with right-hand threaded valves (most commonly brass, BS3, valves for non-corrosive components or stainless steel, BS14, valves for corrosive components).
Standards and Regulations of all countries require the name of the manufacturer, or its code, or its symbol, to be stamped on to the shoulder of the cylinder. Cylinders produced by EKC group companies are stamped “EKC”

All CNG Cylinders produced as per ISO 11439 and ECE R 110 are allowed for maximum usage of 20 years from date of manufacturing and this is stamped on each cylinder. The CNG cylinders go through inspection & requalification process every 3 / 5 year or as defined by the regulatory authority in the country of use.

The temperature range for the cylinder’s material is -40°C to 82°C. Temperatures over +57°C must be applied during a short period of time, or must be localized to ensure that the gas’ temperature inside the cylinder never exceeds +57°C
The cylinder must be installed in the vehicle using the following guidelines.
If the cylinder is to be removed, transported, or stored, the defined handling procedures are necessary to prevent injuries from the personal or damage to the cylinder itself. The cylinders must be transported carefully, to ensure that no damage occurs to the superficial protective painting. The cylinders can only be handled when depressurized. Safety shoes must be worn to protect the feet when transporting cylinders.
The cylinders will be handled with hands free from sand, grease, oil, or any other substance that may contribute to slippery, burning, or contamination to the surface of the cylinder or its neck-thread. The cylinders should not be handled, transported or grabbed by their valves or pressure relief devices. They must not be struck.
The cylinders must be stored in the following way:
The cylinders must be locked to prevent them from rolling or moving during the storage. When the neck-threads of the cylinders do not contain connectors or valves, plastic protective stoppers must be placed to prevent dust from going inside the cylinder. The stored cylinders must be protected from corrosive environments. Rubber stripes must be placed in between the cylinders, during their storage, so as not to cause corrosion on the surface of the cylinders. Specific elevation tools or devices will be used when required. Stowage must be done in a dry place, under shed, to protect the cylinders from the effects of the sun, rain, etc.
The installer of CNG cylinders on the vehicle must follow the regulations regarding the mounting supports for cng cylinders. The following guidelines must be borne in mind .
Two mounting supports, with protective rubber straps, must be used. The rubber straps must not bet wet nor absorbed water. Ensure that the support and the bed-spring are perpendicular regarding the cylinder. If they have not been placed correctly, the support will move when the bed-spring is adjusted. The bed-springs must be tightening with a torque of 40 ft-lbs / 5.54 Kg-m. Ensure to tighten both supports equally.
The valves are required to seal one end of the cylinder, while they allow highly pressurized gas to come in and out. A thermal & pressure relief device (TPRD & PRD) are built in the valve for safety purpose.
Though not mandatory, we recommend that the inspection is performed every 12 months to ensure that CNG fuel storage system is always in good conditions
Conditions that require an immediate visual inspection:
If a cylinder is not in proper conditions to be used, it must be destroyed and must be marked immediately for its disposal and removal from service.

Perform detailed Visual Inspection starting at fill end and progressing to opposite end. Use a flashlight, and mirror.
If cuts, scratches, abrasion, Impact, are visible, Use regulatory guidelines to note the damage level.
Verify if rusting or pitting for surface corrosion is visualized.
According to the level of damage the cylinder:
Is approved for continued use.
Should be handled according to the cylinder manufacturer guideline.
Must be condemned and destroyed.
Do not use welding equipment near the cylinder.
Do not strike the cylinder with tools or other objects.
MEGC is used for the bulk storage and transportation of compressed gases.
